PLANS to introduce Enterprise Governors at schools in York are to be discussed in a bid to tackle the city's low start business start up rate.

City of York Council's Executive will next week review the final report from the authority's Entrepreneurship Scrutiny Review, which recommends a number of measures to improve employability skills among the city's school children.

The Review was instigated in June last year as a means of addressing York's very low record of creating new business or graduate start ups, with the city ranked 316th out of 326 English districts, and there having been 28 per cent fewer York business start ups in the first three months of 2014, compared to 2013.

The cross party review sought to find ways to create a culture in York schools where entrepreneurial learning is embedded, by improving education and opportunities for employability and enterprise-related activities for students across the city.

Following a review of best practice in other local authority areas, the task group has recommended the introduction of an Enterprise Governor at each school.

The report also recommends an annual 'Tenner' challenge be introduced, funded by £1500 donation, linked to the Lord Mayor's Charity and

facilitated by the council or through partnership working with a sponsor, with participation in the challenge to be encouraged through the Enterprise Governors.

After consideration the recommendations were discussed and approved at a full Learning and Culture Overview and Scrutiny Committee on March 11 this year.

The report will now go for final approval before the Executive on Thursday 25.
