THE firm planning to build a mine for plant fertiliser minerals in North Yorkshire has agreed a partnership with a mining equipment and services provider.

Sirius Minerals, the company behind the York Potash Project, has signed a partnership framework with Joy Global, which although is non-binding at this stage, has been signed to formalise the two companies’ current working relationship.

The agreement has been made ahead of Sirius Minerals securing complete planning approval for the £1.5 billion York Potash Mine, which is plans to build underground at Sneaton, near Whitby.

Redcar and Cleveland Council planning officials have already approved the mine and underground transport system and associated handling site – though the North York Moors National Park Authority still needs to give its backing.

Chris Fraser, managing director and chief executive of Sirius Minerals, said: “We’re delighted that one of the world’s leading mining equipment providers wants to increase its level of commitment to the company and project by agreeing.”

Ted Doheny, president and chief executive of Joy Global, said: “We’re excited to collaborate with Sirius Minerals on this significant mining project and play an important role in making the York Potash Project a success .”
