FROM two wheels to four, a North Yorkshire bus manufacturer played a part in the inaugural Tour de Yorkshire.

Sherburn-in-Elmet-based Optare provided one of its newest environmentally-friendly buses to carry passengers from the surrounding villages to Selby on a free service operated by Arriva to support the cycling event.

Chief executive Enric Vassallo said: “The atmosphere on the buses on the day was fantastic and we were thrilled at the response of local people to the service and the Optare buses.”

Optare’s Sherburn-in-Elmet manufacturing facility employs more than 400 people. The firm is the UK’s largest supplier of fully electric buses, with more than 70 in service.

The company has won numerous awards for its range of buses, featuring an integral design and efficient diesel engines, plus a choice of electric and hybrid units utilising the latest low-carbon technology.
