A GRADE II listed building in York which was extensively damaged by floods 15 years ago has been named as one of the best workplaces in the north of England.
The Bonding Warehouse, next to Skeldergate Bridge, was recognised at the annual British Council for Offices (BCO) North of England, North Wales and Northern Ireland property sector awards.
The building, which last year reopened after being converted into office space and four penthouse apartments, picked up the award for Best Refurbished /Recycled Workplace.
Judging chairman Andrew Woodhouse, of Mott MacDonald, said: “We have seen a range of outstanding projects this year, across all categories of the BCO North of England, North Wales and Northern Ireland awards.
“We were hugely impressed by how The Bonding Warehouse was transformed from its deteriorated state into a modern office space that sympathetically retained the iconic appeal of this listed building.”
The building still retains many of its original features, including vaulted ceilings and exposed brickwork, creating a strong visual appeal.
New features include carefully considered flood defences to protect the space for the future. The transformation has attracted new businesses to the area, which in turn has created more jobs for the local economy.
