FROM Chinese and Indian to pizza or fish and chips, York’s takeaway food offering may seem to be well covered – however two young brothers have found a gap in the market for their growing venture.

Oliver and Harry Webb have opened a dessert takeaway after refurbishing premises in Holgate Road.

Their venture Munchies Cakeaway was launched in August last year, and after eight months operating from home the pair soon found themselves in need of bigger premises.

Oliver, 24, who runs the business alongside Harry, 18, who heads up the kitchen, said: “Last summer we had the idea of creating a a dessert delivery business.

“In some of the major cities around the country there are other people doing it and I thought it’s such a great idea why not do it around York? At the time we had converted a brick shed in the garden into a commercial kitchen.

“We’ve been open eight months and it has really taken off, especially with students.

“It got to the stage where we outgrew where we were. At the same time we’d had demand from customers wanting to collect their orders rather than have it delivered. We also decided it would be good to have a physical presence somewhere to raise our profile.”

The business, which previously operated online taking orders three nights a week, has expanded to four nights a week, and now has a team of eight staff.

Trading solely as a takeaway, or ‘cakeaway’, with no eat-in facilities, the business specialises in American-style desserts, with all recipes created by Oliver and Harry.

Oliver said: “There was always a question mark as to the future when we launched it as its such a different idea. We weren’t sure whether it would work.”
