AN independent bicycle retailer has invested £1 million in its two stores to increase stock levels to more than 1,000 bikes.

All Terrain Cycles, which last year opened a megastore showroom at Audby Lane in Wetherby, is looking to capitalise on the legacy of last year's Tour de France.

The family owned business is one of the UK’s largest independent cycle retailers, employing 26 staff in Yorkshire.

Originally established in 1907, the £4 million turnover business also operates a 9,000 sq ft Salts Mill store where it also has its 12,000 sq ft warehouse.

Managing director Tony Booth said: "The resurgence of cycling nationally and the legacy of the TDF in the region are very real for us and we have been investing to build on our position here in the UK’s new home of cycling."

The firm is run by Mr Booth and his family including daughter Natasha, 24, who leads the business's purchasing and customer service functions.

Miss Booth said: "Customers have told us that what they really want is to be able to sit on a bike, touch it and test it.

"In 2015 we will see an even higher proportion of our customers walk away from the store with the bike of their choice as a result of the investment in extra stock on the shop floor.

"We have steadily built the stock levels and displays at Wetherby following a great first three quarters since we opened last summer."
