A LOGISTICS firm which started life as a one van operation in the 1980's has moved into a new warehouse as the venture expands into archive storage.

DAW Logistics has seen business grown by almost 25 per cent after moving from home-based offices into a new warehouse at Full Sutton Industrial Estate.

As well as what has been described as "transitional year" for the logistics arm of the business, growing from a small business to a larger operation with seven vehicles, the company has also launched archive storage services.

To manage the growth, the business has also appointed a new office manager as it looks to offer conference facilities within the offices adjoining its new warehouse.

DAW director and founder Dave Wright said: "We were doing some office removal work for an existing client and they asked if we had archiving capabilities. We went from doing some of their archiving to all of their archiving in off-site facilities.

"I then had the urge to get a building and do more of this. It was a bit of a gamble because our existing archival work at the time was only contracted and was due for renewal. I had to take the building before I knew if we would get the job again.

"Luckily we got the contract renewed, and since then we've had a number of other things for other businesses.

"Alongside that the transport side of the business has been really busy. There has been a transition from a small business to a much bigger business.

"We are trying now to generate more business, we want to drive the storage and the transport further together. The two elements of the business go well together, they sit hand in hand.

"I just think York is a place where there are a lot office based businesses, and I see an opportunity there, and I don't know that there's a huge amount of companies out there doing this."

Mr Wright founded the business in 1988 by chance, and after a period of cut-backs has now seen consecutive years of growth.

He said: "I had a van because I used to race motorbikes. A few people used to ask me to move stuff for them, and I quite liked the idea of developing this further, so I left my job and thought let's have a got setting up my own business.

"I got contracts with a few furniture companies, and eventually started to pick up my own customers. After a few years I got another van and it went from there."
