HUNDREDS of businessmen and women descended upon the National Railway Museum for York and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce's annual dinner.

The black-tie event featured an after dinner speech from former politician and broadcaster Gyles Brandreth.

Outgoing chamber president Suzanne Burnett, managing director of Castle Employment Agency in Scarborough, said: "Business in York and North Yorkshire has come through the worst of the recession. We’re now optimistic, determined and confident.

"Of course there will be challenges ahead, but that’s what building a business is all about.

"But with the energy, passion and talent in this room I’ve never been more confident of the future for our region."

During the evening incoming president Ed Everard, from Saville Audio Visual, was introduced to guests, while former presidents Richard Flanagan and Shaun Watts were presented awards in recognition of their services to the Chamber.
