THE company behind the opening of a new travel shop in York has taken delivery of the latest addition to its fleet, following a £300,000 investment.

Acklams Coaches has purchased a new 57-seat coach as it expands its fleet to help to meet the company’s growing North Yorkshire business this summer as it sees its holiday list and destination numbers reach new highs.

The 14-metre elite coach, fitted with leather seats throughout, was manufactured by North Yorkshire coach builders Alexander Dennis (Plaxton) in Scarborough.

Acklams director Paul Acklam said the investment was essential to enable the company to provide the very best in coach travel.

Established more than 60 years ago and with its headquarters in Beverley, the company is expanding its presence in the York and North Yorkshire region.

Mr Acklam said: "We opened our new Travel Shop in Micklegate in York just a few weeks ago to enable us to meet a growing demand for coach holidays from people living in the York to Harrogate corridor and especially in outlying towns such as Easingwold and Thirsk.

"So far, we’ve been delighted with the response and we are looking forward to becoming a key player in the region’s tourist trade."

Last year, Acklams carried more than 2,000 people to 50 destinations throughout the United Kingdom and into Europe on holidays.

In just over two years, the business has invested around £2.5 million in new vehicles
