A FAMILY run care home business in York has been shortlisted for a national award.

Riccall Care is in the running to be named Yorkshire Family Business of the Year at the national Family Business United awards.

The results are to be determined through a combination of a judging panel and a public online vote.

Paul Andrews, founder and managing director of Family Business United online magazine said: "We are delighted to be able to pull together such a vibrant bunch of family businesses, some that have succeeded for numerous generations and continue to thrive, and others that are relatively young but have great values at the heart of what they do."

Gill Conroy, director of Escrick-based Riccall Care, which was also a finalist in the Family Business of the Year category at the Press Business Awards in November, said: "We are really delighted to be shortlisted and feel it’s a testament to the family values we place at the heart of our care for people at home. We now hope to mobilise some votes."

Riccall Care was established in 1894 by current director Gill Conroy’s parents Peter and Sheila Lawson, who after selling the family home, used all their life savings to open a care home for the elderly.

As the home care side grew, in 1999 Mr and Mrs Conroy took on a second care home; a third in 2001, followed by a fourth in 2006.

The national Awards will be announced on June 11 in London, voting is now open.
