BRITAIN'S continuing membership of the European Union will be in the spotlight at a business meeting in York.

MP Sir Hugh Bayley will host a lunchtime meeting for businesses tomorrow [Friday] at 1pm, and will be joined by the Yorkshire and Humber Labour MEP Richard Corbett.

The pair have spoken of their concern that the UK could be heading towards exiting the European Union which they say could damage the economy and jobs for people in the UK.

Sir Hugh has also spoken of fears that the UK is losing its position as an international leader, and losing influence and respect on the world stage because of a damaging growth in insularity.

He added: "We live in a global world and pay our way through international trade in goods and services. Our economy depends on high levels of inward investment and UK investment abroad, and we need to sit at the top table where international rules, regulations and decisions are made, and to be respected and listened to by other countries.

“I fear our international isolation could get worse if the UK were to leave the EU. The EU has faults, but we will only change it for the better if we have strength and respect from other countries in EU institutions. I believe a case needs to be made for constructive engagement with the EU.”

MEP Mr Corbett, who is Labour deputy leader in Brussels, has been outspoken about the need for the people to be better informed about the EU.

He added: "There is a real danger of the British people sleepwalking towards an exit from the EU. That would be an economic as well as a political disaster for Britain.

"It's crucial that people learn the truth about our EU membership and are not misled by the steady stream of myths and misinformation being spread by anti-Europeans."
