MORE than 200 businessmen and women gathered in York on Friday for the York and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce annual lunch.

Held at the Royal York Hotel, the event featured guest speaker Greg Mesch, chief executive of City Fibre which is building a new fibre broadband network in the city as part of the York Core project.

Mr Mesch said: "2015 is going to be an incredibly exciting year for York as we continue digging and building our infrastructure to connect thousands of homes and businesses in the city.

"York is our biggest example of what we plan to do in cities across the country, and will be used as an example nationwide, and possibly even across Yorkshire, of how we can created gigabit cities, and push their economies forward."

Chamber president Suzanne Burnett reflected on an "busy" year for the organisation and its members, which saw the York and North Yorkshire chamber merge with the West Yorkshire Chamber, while York saw the opening of its new Vangarde Shopping Centre, and work get underway on the new Hiscox insurance building, alongside the opening of Network Rail's new control centre, and a boost to retail with increasing footfall figures.
