A FORMER York PE teacher has gone into business launching is own fitness venture.

After 12 years teaching in secondary schools Neil Owens has launched Podfit from his home in Ambrose Street.

Mr Owens said: "I had been teaching PE for many years and very quickly realised that a career in the fitness industry would allow me to combine my passion for helping others with my love and dedication to sport and fitness."

Mr Owens completed his Level 3 Personal Trainer and Exercise Referral qualifications in 2010 through Lifetime Training, and now trains individuals with various health conditions, including a 26 year-old with osteoporosis.

Talking of his privately owned gym, Mr Owens said: "I now own a personal trainer studio in York city centre, with four personal trainers under my wing. I’ve also recently received trademark approval for my new clothing brand and supplement range. It’s certainly keeping me busy."

Next year is set to see further growth as Mr Owens hopes to increase floor space and double the number of trainers working at the current gym, with longer term plans to open another gym within three years.

Mr Owens added: "The training I completed with Lifetime has been fundamental for my new career path. I hope to complete my Level 4 Personal Trainer qualification, specialising in lower back pain in 2015."
