YORK construction firm Shepherd Group has been named among the league of Britain's top 100 Biggest Private Companies.

The list was published this weekend in the 13th annual Sunday Times Top Track 100 league table, ranking Britain’s 100 private companies with the biggest sales.

Huntington-based Shepherd Group appeared at number 84 on the list with sales of £748 million, profits of £33 million and 3,228 staff.

The group has three sub divisions Shepherd Engineering, Portakabin and Shepherd Group Built Environment, all of which contain their own companies.

Shepherd Group joined five other firms in Yorkshire representing the county in the Top 100 list.

The six Yorkshire companies had combined sales of £4.9 billion, up 15 per cent on the previous year, and together employ more than 17,000 people, having added more than 1,000 staff. They had combined profits of £884 million.

The biggest company in Yorkshire remains Bradford-based Kelda, which was number 52, which grew sales by 7 per cent to top the £1 billion mark.
