THE first phase of York Racecourse's redevelopment has been completed in time for today's season opener following negotiation work by Langleys Solicitors.

The York-based law firm, which has offices in Micklegate, acted for York Racecourse in talks with City of York Council about the variation to the existing racecourse lease.

The lease needed to be extended to include the extra third of an acre which allowed for the relocation of the new larger pre-parade ring, new saddling boxes and ultimately a new weighing room.

The first stage of the project has been completed ahead of the start of the York 2014 season at the Dante Festival today.

Tim Cross, partner and head of commercial property at Langleys, said: “This is an exciting chapter in the history of York Racecourse and we’re delighted to have supported the Racecourse team in their lease discussions. We look forward to providing further support as the Northern End Development progresses.”

York Racecourse was also supported by Tim Craig, partner and head of construction at Langleys who acted on the construction element of the development with the appointment of Lindum York as main contractors with the use of many subcontractors local to the course including York Handmade Brick and local master blacksmith Dom Barker.

Mr Craig's role also included advising the Racecourse on the procurement process, the negotiation of the building contract and the appointment of a range of consultants involved in the development.
