A YORK cake baking business has expanded with the opening of its first retail operation.

Yorkshire Icing has opened its doors at the Bull Commercial Centre, in Stockton Lane, selling cake baking and decorating supplies as well as hosting a range of baking classes.

The shop is an extension of Angela's Angel Cakes which was set up six years ago by Angela and Robert Webster from a family home in Copmanthorpe.

Mr Webster said: "This is something we have wanted to do for quite a few years but were put off by the recession.

"We have been saving, and then when Imaginative Icing in the city centre closed about a year ago we saw a gap in the market that we could fill.

"In January this year we decided to bite the bullet and started putting things together to open the shop.

"Also with television programmes such as the Great British Bake Off it has really pushed the market to have a go at baking."

Mr and Mrs Webster were given a helping hand in setting up the venture by Business Support York and North Yorkshire, based at York Eco Business Centre, in Clifton Moor.

Mr Webster said: "They were fantastic, and gave us great support across all areas, we couldn't have done it without them."

On hand to officially open Yorkshire Icing was York panto dame Berwick Kaler, along with Mr and Mrs Webster's friends and family.
