WHILE stores at Vangarde Shopping Centre opened their doors this week, the city centre saw a new independent boutique open in Fossgate.

On Tuesday entrepreneur Sally Wilson, Heworth, opened the doors to her brand new independent shop, Swirl, which offers boho and hippy style clothing for women, men and children.

The inspiration for Swirl, originally an online business, began when Sally struggled to find the right clothing she wanted.

Sally said: “I’d seen clothing I liked at music festivals but I could never find things for myself which were of good quality and available in a range of sizes”.

Although Sally’s seven-year-old online store started off as a hobby, customers were increasingly asking her to make clothes available within a walk-in store.

In opening the shop on Fossgate, Sally wanted to make sure she could offer an inclusive range. She said:

“The thing with the out of town shopping centre stores is you’ll just find everything that store normally sells.

“Tourists who come for the history of the city will want to find and see the independent stores York has to offer”.
