A GLIMPSE of how the former Terry’s chocolate factory in York is to be redeveloped has been unveiled by one of the firms behind the 270-home project.

The 27-acre Bishopthorpe Road site was jointly bought by Henry Boot Developments Ltd and York company David Wilson Homes earlier this year.

It was bought from its previous owners, GHT Developments LLP, and lead to plans to finally transform the site being revived.

The housing will be built at the South Back end of the site, and David Wilson Homes Yorkshire East, which is part of Barratts, has released new images of how the Chocolate Works development will look.

It has been designed by London-based Richard Partington Architects, which also designed the Derwenthorpe “model village” in York.

A planning application covering details of the first phase of the homes scheme is due to go before City of York Council’s planning committee.

It includes 57 houses and two apartment buildings containing 29 flats, as well as a supermarket. The Chocolate Works scheme would also create 200 construction jobs.

Henry Boot will be responsible for the redevelopment of the iconic Terry’s factory buildings themselves.

Planning permission is already in place for the buildings to become housing, offices, shops or hotels.

In his report to this week’s full meeting of the council, the authority’s leader, Coun James Alexander, said the first phase of the housing development included a mix of three and four-bedroom homes and two-bedroom apartments, with the store being at the main route into the site.

He said: “Work is planned to commence by the end of the year, with residents moving in possibly as early as mid-2014.

“I welcome the swift progress on this brownfield site being brought back into use for much-needed homes.”
