THE green light has been given for work to start redeveloping a derelict landmark hotel in the centre of York.
A partnership involving Tees Valley Housing has been given the go-ahead by City of York Council to convert the site of the old White Swan Hotel in Piccadilly into18 flats on the upper floors of the building, which is on the corner of Piccadilly and Coppergate.
The site will be revamped using £450,000 of funding from the Homes and Communities Agency to make way for 17 one bedroom apartments as well as one two-bed home for rent. As previously reported in The Press, Sainsbury’s confirmed in July it wants open a store in the building at street level.
Martin Hawthorne, of Tees Valley Housing, said: “The scheme will have a range of benefits and we hope this will be the first of many similar initiatives in York that could increase housing, boost business even further and even create jobs.”
