Food firms taste success at Deliciouslyorkshire awards
THE cream of Yorkshire’s food producers took the stage last night at the region’s “food Oscars” with a hat-trick of awards for York businesses.
Held at the National Railway Museum, the Deliciouslyorkshire 2013/14 Awards celebrated the tastes and flavours of all things food and drink, with 20 categories covering North, South, East and West Yorkshire.
Representing York among the award winners were Sloe Motion, scooping Best Drink for its Sloe Whiskey and Mercers of Yorkshire which won Best Sweet Preserve for its Blackcurrent Conserve, while Andrew Voakes of Voakes Pies was named Local Food Hero.
As well as winning their categories Sloe Motion was also shortlisted in Best Drink for its Sloe Port, alongside York Brewery, while Mercers was shortlisted again in the Sweet Preserve category for its Luxury Strawberry & Champagne Preserve, as well as being a finalist for the Best Savoury Condiment Award.
Other local finalists were Sarah Puckett of Puckett’s Pickles for Local Food Hero, The Farmers Cart for Best Prepared Meat, Ye Old Sun Inn for Best Fish, and St Helen’s Farm which was shortlisted for Best Diary and Best New Product.
Last night’s ceremony was hosted by seasoned food award judge and BBC broadcaster Nigel Barden, a former Yorkshire wine merchant, whose food and drink contributions appear regularly on BBC Radio 2, 4 and 5, and in national newspapers.
Mr Barden said: “We are always amazed by the hidden gems lurking on the dining tables and in the delis of Yorkshire.
“Tonight was our chance to honour these food heroes for their hard work and talent and get their name out there.
Guests at the awards enjoyed a drinks reception, canapés and a banquet that featured many of the shortlisted foods including Smoked Trout & Horseradish on Dill Scones from ‘Best Fish’ winner Staal Smokehouse, East Yorkshire.
