New city-centre Morrisons supermaket to open in York next week

SUPERMARKET giant Morrisons will open its new city-centre store in York on Monday.

The 'M Local' shop in Spurriergate will create 20 new jobs, the company has said.

Lenny Bear, the St Leonard's Hospice mascot, and Vikings from the Jorvik centre will attend the grand opening at 9am.

Gemma Hayes-Logan, store manager, said: “We can’t wait to open on Monday and I’m sure customers will love the store. We’ve been out to introduce ourselves to the local community and I’m pleased that Lenny Bear and members from the City’s popular Jorvik Viking Centre will join us on Monday to officially cut the ribbon.

"We’ll also have a community noticeboard inside the store, which we’d encourage customers and other local businesses to use to help promote local events. We hope shoppers will come in and give us a try.”

The Morrisons shop is the latest in a wave of new supermarket openings in York city centre in recent years. Since 2010, Tesco has opened in Low Ousegate, Piccadilly and Goodramgate, while Sainsbury's is planning to open in Micklegate.

A Morrisons spokesman said the new store would feature a ‘Food to Go’ section, selling fresh coffee, pastries, and bacon sandwiches, as well as a salad bar. After the opening day, the store will open from 7am to 11pm daily. A series of licensing restrictions were agreed earlier this year, to try to minimise the impact of alcohol sales from the shop on city-centre drunkenness and antisocial behaviour.

Excellent news. Will give Tesco and Sainsbury some healthy competition.

As someone that refuses to shop at Tesco, it'll be nice to have another city centre choice other than M&S. They'll be getting my custom!

Yay - I can now stop doing them awful drives up to Clifton Moor and Monks Cross to do my shopping.

All we need now is an ASDA to really put the foot in and slowly kill off the city centre with pointless shops.

Why do you do that when there is a Morrisons at Foss Islands?

If you have a viable idea that will make money from a city centre shop that is not 'pointless' why don't you open one? Or are you just a whinger who can only moan about the actions of others?

I was being sarcastic.

If I wanted to go to Morrisons on Foss Islands road I would, the same way I would also go to Sainsburys or Waitrose as this is where supermarkets belong.

They don't belong in the city centre. Unless you class foss islands as city centre!

It will make money, there is no doubt about that, but it will also kill off other retail shops.

I just can't understand how planning permission for city centre supermarkets can be granted when there is already a Tesco's, then just a few streets away you have a big sainsburys, Morrisons, Waitrose and Asda on Layerthorpe. - Then if you drive 2-3 mile in the other directions you have them all at Monks Cross and Clifton moor, not forgetting Tadcaster road.

I do like a good moan yes, when there is something to moan about. And at the same time I praise good ideas, which in York is very few.
