Butcher wins gold medals for pork pies

AN EAST Yorkshire butcher struck gold three times at the BPEX (British Pork Executive) North East Roadshow in Harrogate.

David Mounfield, of award-winning butchers JA Mounfield & Son, in Bubwith, gained three gold medals for his pork pie, pork-and-chicken pie and chicken-and-ham pie, being scored 99/100 for his pork pie.

Last year, Mr Mounfield was named National Champion by BPEX for his one-pound traditional pork pie.

Newby Hall farm shop also won seven awards, including regional roadshow champion for its home-cured bacon and gammon. It won gold awards for its plain back bacon and horseshoe rasher, silver for its old English sausages, tomato-and-herb sausages and pork-and-tomato sausages and bronze for its streaky bacon.

Charlotte Atkinson, from Elite Meat Ltd in Harrogate, also won overall champion in her category for her caramelised onion pork paté.
