AN INDEPENDENT café and deli which launched last year in York is quickly expanding with a new shop at York Station.
Filmore & Union was founded in 2012, starting with its healthy-eating restaurant and takeaway business in Low Petergate. The station venture, which opened on Thursday, is its fourth outlet.
It also has a Harrogate deli and takeaway and one in Wetherby, which will soon offer an evening restaurant. Owner Adele Carnell is also in discussions about a fifth restaurant.
Filmore & Union, which takes its name from two prominent streets in San Francisco, which is known for its healthy eating, now employs about 70 people, said Adele.
The new station outlet, underneath the staircase on platform eight, was a coup for an independent retailer, she said.
“I used to travel to London a lot and I was sick of having nothing to eat that was healthy. I saw this unit was free and persevered to get it,” she said.
“They originally wanted one of the big names, but when they realised what we did and that we already had a place in York they were really supportive.”
The listed building, which is part of the Victorian staircase, can now seat ten people, with 20 more seats outside the shop.
Adele said the company was focusing on food development, including a wider range for people with food intolerances, and also developing a more accessible takeaway range.
She said: “We have had a lot of really good response. A lot of customers from the York shop have come and a lot of people have said thank goodness there’s something healthy to eat.”
The food is prepared fresh daily in Filmore & Union’s own kitchen in Wetherby, using fresh and organic ingredients.
Chef Will Pugh said: “What we’ve tried to do is create a food brand that touches every area of your food life.
“We’re trying to create ‘wellness food’ for people that really love food. It’s not just a philosophy; it’s something we take through every single detail of the business. All our staff are intensely trained to support this.
“What is known about nutrition is moving and changing constantly, and we see it as a brand that will constantly morph into new areas.”
