McDonald's to create 45 new jobs in York

FAST food firm McDonald’s is to create 45 new jobs in York this year.
The announcement is part of a nationwide commitment to create 2,500 new positions across the UK by the end of the year, including 150 in Yorkshire.
In 2012, the company exceeded its pledge to create 2,500 by an additional 1,000, bringing its current total UK workforce to 91,000.
Last year, 70 per cent of the new positions were given to those under 21 years old, it said.
New employees in York will also have the chance to gain nationally-recognised qualifications.
Local McDonald’s operations manager James Thompson said: “In 2012 we added some fantastic crew from the local community to our team, many of whom were starting out in their first job.”

When McDonald's first got planning permission for the Blake St "restuarant", one of the conditions was that they would carry out regular litter patrols of the area. It would certainly improve the appearance of Blake Street and Saint Helen's Square if this planning condition was enforced.

It's 20 years since i worked there but at the time a lot of the "crew" were @ College or University.
It's these sort of service industry jobs with a variety of working hours that are needed by students amongst others.

Might be laying staff off, not taking more on. I see that someone has brought their licence to review. Load of blue notices were up on Blake Street since the New Year. If that goes ahead the place will be shutting at 11pm.

According to the article, it is 45 jobs 'in York'....so, depending on whether you count the one on the A64, that is 45 jobs over 4-5 restaurants over the course of a year...or aprox 1 per restaurant per month.
Given that, as someone has pointed out, a lot of the staff are students who will probably move on after their course is finished, this figure does not seem to be much higher (if at all) than the regular turnover of staff would be. It would be interesting to see the regular turnover figures for staff and compare it to this to see how many of the jobs are actually "new" ones and how many are simply replacing staff that leave.

McFilth. A staggering amount of trash littering the roadsides of the city environs comes from this company. Their website trumpets their responsibilty to the environment but, like their "food" it's a load of garbage. The nice thing about York is that it has lots of indie cafes, so there are alternatives to risking your waistline at McDo.

As for the litter situation I have brought up my children to realise that litter must be placed in a bin and believe we all have a part to play when keeping the city clean. I believe that parents have a massive part to play with rules and expectations !! (thats another subject though)

The housing benefit cap will not affect people unless they are living in the higher priced housing in London.
I dont know about the 30% of council tax thing you mention.
McDonalds pays a good wage to those who put the effort in, not only minimum wage.
The tax threshold is increasing, so people on lower wages will pay little or no income tax.
These jobs are perfect for people who need work!
They can pay their bills by earning money, not refusing it and living off the state.
