A FORMER lottery winner has set up a new shop in Acomb.

Andy Kirby was one of 13 people in a syndicate at Poppleton Road Costcutter which won £2.1 million in 1997.

He invested his share of the money in running a convenience store, then his own landscape gardening business before setting up the Kirby Family Pound Store. He said gardening work slowed down in the recession, but he expected tighter household budgets would mean more demand for value-priced homewares.

He runs the store, on York Road, with his son Craig.

He said: “I missed my shop very much and always wanted to go back into the retail trade. I decided to open a pound store in Acomb as I wanted to try and support my local area as times are very tough for everybody and I wanted to offer good value for money and to try and help local people. My business will never be as big as any other pound store as I am small and independent, but I will always have different bargains.”
