A NORTH Yorkshire waste collector which launched a spin-off compost venture has sold more than 20,000 bags in a year, diverting 260,000 tonnes of waste from landfill.

Yorwaste manages more than half a million tonnes of waste every year, carrying out 450,000 collections across North Yorkshire.

The Northallerton headquartered business is vying for the Business Innovation of the Year, and Socially Responsible Business of the Year titles in recognition of its Yorganics product.

Yorwaste turns the green garden waste it collects from local authorities into a 100 per cent peat free and 100 per cent recycled product that is now sold to the public, closing the loop and turning green waste into a sustainable product.

Yorganics is now available to buy in more than 45 outlets throughout North Yorkshire, including the household waste sites, where you can drop your green garden waste off and buy a bag of Yorganics while you are there.

Yorganics has now sold more than 20,000 bags since in launch at the Great Yorkshire show in 2016 as well as supplying large bulk tonnages to farmers and the agricultural industry throughout the UK.

Yorganics has many uses including gardening and horticulture and for soil conditioning. It can also be used as a mulch cover in the winter to protect plants against the frost.

Gillian Mulroe or Yorwaste, which in total employs a team of 350 staff, said: “We are so proud of this product and the work of the teams who have made this happen.

“Its environmental, its sustainable, its creating jobs, its putting back into the community, its a change, its ethical and its socially responsible.”
