York-based Freebird Events has dealt with more than 50,000 participants, including youngsters from the age of eight, since it was launched in 2007, according to its entries in the Family Business and Small Business categories.

Founded and led by brothers Peter and Paul Mathieson, the company offers ten triathlons across Yorkshire, as well as its Zombie Survival Adventure Run events and two new obstacle course races.

The brothers have taken part in triathlons since the 1980s and are qualified in event safety management and traffic management. Both are experienced triathlon coaches and referees and have competed in events at all distances, from sprint distance to Ironman.

Family is very important to them, as they work closely together and also have the support of their sister, brother-in-law and girlfriends “who are involved in the events as marshals, food vendors and stall holders, making it a true family-affair.

“Peter and Paul have created a business that they are passionate about, sharing their experiences and knowledge to create a memorable, fun and healthy-living experience.” The entry says: “Freebird Events’ mission is to deliver high-quality events throughout the country for elite athletes and beginners alike, creating a recognised brand image and further developing current and new events for all stakeholders.”
