A VILLAGE store and tea room operating out of a renovated Victorian school was established by its owner in a bid to take on the role as a key community lifeline for a village which previously had no shop.

The Old School in Rufforth employs nine local staff and more than 250 people visit the school-themed eatery, complete with blackboards and bells, each day.

The garden eating area was designed by a local landscaper, the building restored by local builders, craftsmen and electricians, the building’s past researched by a local historian and the photos, memorabilia and lace tablecloths supplied by locals.

The focus of the business is obviously on the local community, hosting both a community notice board and a monthly Neighbourhood Watch Surgery for those who find it difficult to attend York police station.

The new usage of the previously disused site was welcomed by the Parish Council and Trustees of the Old School. Local charities are supported by the venture including Rufforth Brownies, which planted 2000 bulbs donated by The Old School. The business is also profitable, demonstrating that a business can be both financially viable and socially responsible.

The connecting store sells goods tailored to the needs of the community including newspapers and essential food items, where as much is locally-sourced as possible including honey, fruit and vegetables, cards, flowers and herbs. The store also features an authentic Victorian-style sweet shop.

Owner Frank Di Lorenzo said: "As a testament from the villagers and its surrounding communities, this transformed building and new thriving, friendly business, in its central village location, acts as a heart which has pumped life back into Rufforth. It has reunited the community and created a legacy for the future."

Mr Di Lorenzo, who had recently retired and wanted to reinvest locally, brings his Italian influence to the menu with traditional pasta dishes prepared daily by family members, which are served alongside fresh baked bread in the family friendly lunch spot.
