A CHILDREN'S nursery has seen its staff gain 19 professional qualifications in just six years as part of its approach towards employee development.

Young Discoverers, which looks after 51 children at its Escrick day nursery and 26 at its before and after school clubs, is celebrating the achievements of its staff through the Best People Development Award, as well as entering the Small Business of the Year Award.

The business, which employs a team of 18, encourages all employees to train for further qualifications, and appoints a mentor where doing so to support learning.

Working closely with York Training Centre, which assists in delivering the Early Years Educator Level 3 qualification, no less than 16 employees have gained 19 professional childcare or management qualifications ranging from level 2 to Foundation Degree level 5 whilst working for the company in just six years since the nursery opened.

Six members of staff are currently undertaking further qualifications including two on the Foundation Degree with a further two starting the Foundation Degree in September.

Nursery director Ruth Newton said: "A flexible working policy is in full operation to support learning and the attendance of college.

"A logistical nightmare perhaps, but also an opportunity that ensures a workforce significantly better qualified than the Ofsted requirements dictate and the industry norm.

"Staff are employed from a diverse range of backgrounds, so as well as a former bank manager the team can boast a lorry driver, florist, retailer, beauty therapist and estate agent, as well as many staff with significant experience in caring for and educating children.

"It is this approach that has ensured there is no barrier to working with children for the right person, and with the commitment to learning expected of each person recruited to the team, the skills and qualifications can be gained, underpinned by the genuine desire to make a difference to children."
