BACK for 2014 to defend their title of Small Business of the Year is York icecream producer Yorvale.

Founded by Ian and Lesley Buxton, with a single icecream van in 1989, the Acaster Malbis based business has grown significantly over the last quarter of a century.

Mrs Buxton said: "Although neither of us were born into farming families, dairy farming was in Ian’s blood and we are proud to have developed a successful business that saw 20 per cent growth last year despite tough trading conditions.

"We have grown our business through hard work and commitment to quality ingredients, exceptional customer service and exemplary manufacturing practices.

"We are proud that all of our ingredients are sourced from the UK and most are sourced locally and that more than 50 per cent of our ice cream is sold within Yorkshire."

Loyal Yorvale customers can also buy the brands icecream from the First Direct Arena in Leeds through farm shops, tourist attractions and independent retailers to Waitrose, Booths, Asda, Tesco and Morrisons.

Further afield, the company reaches a loyal base of hotel and catering customers by working closely with its network of nationwide food service distributors, and has been invited to work with development chefs at Saga Cruise Ships to create a range of Fusion Inspired ice creams for their cruise liner, The Saga Sapphire.

Last year Yorvale launched a new frozen yoghurt brand in response to customer demand for healthy, tasty desserts. Mr and Mrs Buxton entered the £162 million frozen yoghurt market with a brand called Yoryog.

This year Yorvale has added a 100 pallet cold store to its factory and created a further three jobs in manufacturing, bringing the total number employed in the business to 18.
