Stockeld Park, near Wetherby, is a textbook example of how an agriculture business can diversify – in its case, into a tourism attraction that is a magic winter wonderland for children.

Now it is hoping to be recognised in the Tourism and Hospitality and Family Business categories of The Press Business Awards.

The 2,000-acre estate has been in Peter Grant's family for 150 years and is home to the largest Christmas tree plantation in the north of England. In 2007, to boost Christmas tree sales, Peter and wife Susie opened The Christmas Adventure.

The Grant family skilfully and respectfully made use of the estate's natural resources to create a one-of-a-kind winter attraction. Sixteen acres of ancient woodland were transformed into an Enchanted Forest, filled with original sculptures and art pieces. A Nordic ski trail adds further variety to the Enchanted Forest, a maze was created from harvesting yew trees from across the estate and real ice was installed on the rink in 2011.

Their passion to create something different by capitalising on their beautiful Yorkshire surroundings makes them great ambassadors to others from all types of business backgrounds.

Last year, they invested £250,000 in improved and upgraded facilities and now Stockeld Park's Magical Gift Emporium is the largest Christmas shop in the north of England. The estate's winter attraction has seen a 20 per cent growth in visitor numbers annually, welcoming more than 100,000 visitors in a 12-week opening period.

This success has led to further expansion, with Adventure Seasons open for Halloween and February half-term. This month, saw the opening of the Summer Adventure, offering new and active Adventure Zones within the beautiful woodland.

There is the outdoor roller rink, a maze and go-karts, or children can explore, climb and play in the Enchanted Forest as they discover new sculptures and installations at every turn. There are also indoor play, games, crafts and creativity.

The business is now recognised as a major seasonal employer in the area, recruiting more than 140 seasonal staff.
