A York security business is thriving by providing protection for increasing numbers of empty business premises.

Wireless Watchman, based at York Science Park, increased turnover by 25 per cent last year and expects to beat that growth in 2013.

The company, which is being rebranded as Video Alarm Systems Ltd, is a real family affair, with two members of each of two families.

It is hoping to be recognised for its achievements in the Small Business and Family Business categories of The Press Business Awards 2013.

It was started by Theresa Leighton and protects empty properties using an innovative combination security system that sits between an alarm and CCTV system.

The system, which is battery-powered so it can be used in empty and derelict premises, has infra-red sensors and cameras.

The device sends video to a control centre when the alarm is triggered.

Video Alarm Systems works with councils, property managers, construction and utility companies around the country and is increasing new business year-on-year while maintaining reliable rental income, said sales director Jacqueline Leighton, Theresa's daughter.

Jacqueline joined her mother in the family business after they recognised the gap in the market between CCTV and alarm systems.

When the recession hit, she said, many businesses found CCTV too expensive to maintain.

The company, which is based in the Innovation Centre, started off in a small office for two people but as it has grown it has acquired bigger premises.

It now employs six people, all family and friends, and is about to launch Home Watchman, a residential alarm with video alerts sent to a smart phone via an app.

"The number one focus for the company is on customer service, and all staff work tirelessly to maintain the high level of customer satisfaction achieved to date," said Jacqueline.

"We are committed to the needs of our customers and the company has earned an excellent reputation in the industry for the service it provides.

‘‘This has been achieved through hard work and dedication by employees who are all equally committed to maintaining this reputation."
