A family-run farm shop which opened in November 2011 is hoping to inspire more people to buy and cook local-grown wholesome produce.

And Tancred Farm Shop at Whixley is also keen for recognition at The Press Business Awards, having entered the Family Business Of The Year and New Business Of The Year categories.

Dean Hullah is a second generation pig farmer and founded Tancred Farm Shop after identifying a need to supply customers and businesses with home-reared meat and local produce at a reasonable price.

He says: “All our pork comes from pigs born and reared here on the farm. We even make their food to our own special recipes ensuring we can provide the highest quality meat to the public.

“We have over 40 varieties of home-made sausages and also supply a range of other meats and home-made produce."

It is a real family affair and you will always find Dean or Angela on the Tancred Farm Shop Stand at the York and Leeds Farmers' Markets with their children, Catherine, Mary and Lewis.

Dean says: “All the children help out at the farm shop serving customers or getting involved in the sausage making and my father, Frank, is always busy in our kitchen garden growing the vegetables we sell.”

At the heart of the farm shop, which now employs five full-time members of staff, is the butchery, where you can get advice on recipes and cuts of meat to suit your requirements.

There’s also the coffee shop where you can call in for breakfast or lunch, a quick cup of tea or coffee or a piece of cake.

The coffee shop meals are freshly made to order and, along with homemade cakes and a large selection of coffees, teas and soft drinks, are served all day.
