Knee woe hits Wroe
City schemer Nicky Wroe, whose season has come to a premature end
City schemer Nicky Wroe, whose season has come to a premature end

YORK City midfielder Nicky Wroe has played his last game of the season but will be offered a new contract at KitKat Crescent this summer.

Wroe will be sidelined for the Minstermen's final five fixtures of 2007/2008, starting with tomorrow's home meeting against Woking, because of a niggling knee problem.

But the injury is not a long-term concern and City boss Colin Walker is ready to retain the 22-year-old midfielder for a further year albeit with instructions to toughen up.

Walker said: "Nicky's been carrying the injury for a while.

He's had good games and bad games with it and good days and bad days in training but now is the time to find out what the problem is.

"He's reached double figures in goals without playing in every game so he's done well and he will be one that we talk to about next season. Hopefully, we can get that sorted out.

"Then, he's got to come back fitter and stronger because we've found out in this league you don't only need footballers, you need people who can play against different types of teams. If he's going to get in regularly, he will need to change his way of playing a little."

Centre-back Darren Kelly, who is already under contract for next season, is also unlikely to return to action before the end of the current campaign.

Former Derry defender Kelly started jogging this week after a calf injury but, having played for longer than a year without a break because of the overlap with the Irish League season, Walker sees no advantage in rushing him back.

He said: "There is no point in risking him. We worked out that he had played 71 games when he had to come off at Rushden so he was always going to pick up an injury or two and he's had a couple of bad pulls."

Striker Craig Farrell will not be considered tomorrow either despite playing an hour for the reserves on Wednesday after recovering from a badly-bruised foot.

He is more likely to be involved in next Saturday's trip to Torquay while on-loan pair Sam Duncum and Chris Hall are also ruled out for the Woking match.

Hall has suffered a training ground ankle injury but may return to senior action before the end of the season while Rotherham winger Duncum is recovering from his hamstring muscle spasm but Walker admitted: "He might be somebody we will have to look at in pre-season now."

But teenage left-back Andy McWilliams has been called up for tomorrow's game and will be hoping to emulate the likes of fellow trainees Liam Shepherd and Adam Boyes this season by making his first-team debut.

Former Scarborough utility man Jimmy Beadle may have to wait for his first appearance, however, with Walker adding: "Jimmy had his best game for us on Wednesday but he's only 19 and has got to knuckle down and make sure he's still impressing in the reserve team."

Woking will arrive at KitKat Crescent with a new temporary management team of Colin Lippiatt and Justin Edinburgh following the dismissal of Frank Gray after Tuesday night's 2-0 home defeat to Stevenage.

And Walker has warned his team about a possible reaction.

He said: "Stevenage took them to town in the week and they could be a wounded animal. We've got to be wary of that.

"We haven't opened teams up very often at home and next season we will need players, whether they are the current ones or new ones, who can open he door. That's a task I have set myself."

City (probable): Evans, Parslow, McGurk, Craddock, Purkiss, Elliott, Panther, Woolford, Robinson, Brodie, Sodje. Subs: Mimms, McWilliams, Lloyd, Boyes, Fortune-West.

Woking (probable): Worner, Lorraine, Hutchinson, Gasson, Green, Batt, Maledon, Gray, Sole, Morgan, Norville. Subs: Gindre, Ruby, Ugunbote, Lambu, Marum.

Referee: Ross Joyce (Middlesbrough).

Im a poet and i dont know it , Springs to mind.Hope everyone gets behind the team for the last 5 games of season.Disappointing season but could have been worse,Colin derserves a chance next season.Players need to prove there worth contracts next, wroe definatley deserves new deal one of about 7 or 8 who do.Mannys heart dont seem at the club last few months,a good player but i wondered if he has be tapped up by another conference club.Tyrone Thompson would be a great replacement for Manny very simlar in styles and also hails from Yorkshire so would settle quickly.Mimms deserves a deal, maybe not quite ready for 1st team yet but would be a promising understudy to next seasons 1st choice.

Why would we want to replace Panther with an inferior player?
I'm not saying Thompson is a bad player, but I wouldn't release Panther in favour of him.

Slightly eased some worrys hearing wroe will get a new contract have been realy worried that it was going to be the no ambition or passion players offered new deals so they could pop round to the mcgills on a saturday night after the game to talk about staying in the conference for the next 5 yers!! promising start though think wroe is a quality player who could probaly play at a higher standard!!

I know how popular this will be, but I think some people have (possibly deliberately) misinterpreted the JMP comments about 5 more years in the BSP.

The point, as I read it, was that if we cannot get things sorted on the new ground as soon as possible, that was the sort of future we COULD face. Not that they were aiming to keep us here for 5 years, just that it was possible as things stood.

It's just as well we don't have anyone with a 'groin' problem or the headline could be 'One hung lo at the Crescent'

I would be sorry to see Panther go. Even this season he's had some very good games - City wouldn't have won at Droylsden without his powerful bursts which led to two of the goals, I believe. If fully fit he'll be an asset next season, although I think Kelly or McGurk might make a better captain.
If not (or as well), how about Iqbal - the Beckenbauer of the Conference - at Farsley. He's been superb whenever I've seen him and he might not want to stay there if they get relegated.
By the way, on reflection, it occurred to me that my pathetic attempt at humour above may have caused offence to some - if it did I apologise.

I quite like Iqbal, but suspect he is more bluster than any real quality.

I am sure Nicky Wroe can take the jokes about his name. Having the same surname as Nicky we can take it from one who started watching YC in 1946. Does anyone remember Peter Pickering as the best goalkeeper for YC. He saved 7 penalties in the first 3 months of his career with YC. The worst GK I believe was Ken Pegg, played one game, lost 7-2 against Tranmere & was sacked. The most acrobatic GK was Eduoard Wojtczak 1946/7 with the Polish Army and for YC in 1946/7. His style was spectacular & after an acrobatic save would often bow to the crowd. Those were the days.

I enjoyed reading gordonwroe's comments. It's good having all these young whippersnappers' contributions but it's also nice to know that there's someone out there who's been watching City longer than I have - my daughter doesn't think that's possible!
Also best wishes to the younger Wroe - I hope his knee is right for the new season, we need him (no pun intended).
