City kids’ rhapsody in red
STARS of the future have been learning about football the York City way.
More than 50 aspiring footballers aged between five and 14 took part in a week-long course at Oaklands Sports Centre, in Acomb, which was run by York City's Football in the Community programme.
Officers Danial Parker and Pete Vasey, along with community coach Daniel Palmer, improved the youngsters' individual skills with drills before the players took part in World Cup-style tournaments.
York City manager Colin Walker and the first team squad popped in to take part in a special challenge with the children and sign autographs.
Parker said: "The purpose of the week is to try to get kids involved in football, get them fit and healthy while lifting up the name of York City Football Club.
"This is the fifth week we've put on, we run them during the school holidays and we run them at places all around York. If we any see anyone who has got talent we can also push them in the direction of the Centre of Excellence scheme.
"Hopefully, in years to come, some youngsters who have been on one of these courses will break into the youth team and the first team."
