Train firm top in passenger satisfaction survey

A YORK-BASED train company has scored the highest marks for passenger satisfaction of any train operator in the UK.

Grand Central – which runs four direct services a day between York and London – achieved a 95 per cent rating in a survey conducted by the independent watchdog Passenger Focus.

Ninety-three per cent of passengers also gave a positive rating to the comfort of the trains’ seating areas, and 92 per cent were satisfied with personal security on the trains and the length of time journeys were scheduled to take.

Managing director Tom Clift welcomed the results, saying they were a ringing endorsement of “Open Access” operators, which were entirely reliant on passenger goodwill to generate income, rather than government support.

He said the ratings were also “a testament to the skill and hard work of our dedicated and friendly staff,” he said. “The results show yet again that small really is beautiful.”

Other train companies operating out of York also welcomed their satisfaction ratings, which included 87 per cent for East Coast, 84 per cent for First TransPennine Express, 83 per cent for Northern and 82 per cent for CrossCountry, in the survey which was carried out last autumn.

An East Coast spokesman said its rating was one point ahead of the average for all long distance train operators, and equal to the same score achieved in the last survey in Spring 2011.

He said: “Customers saying they were “very satisfied” with their journey increased to 43 per cent, which is very encouraging, especially following the introduction of a new East Coast timetable and First Class Complimentary food and drinks service from May 2011.”

Ian Bevan, managing director of Northern Rail, said: “We are happy that the majority of our passengers are satisfied with our services and that our overall satisfaction figure has increased to 83 per cent. We are pleased to see more passengers feel safe both at our stations and on our trains, reflecting our investment in CCTV and our rail response teams.”

He said he realised overcrowding had been a particular issue with our passengers, which was reflected in the results for “sufficient room to sit or stand on the train” declining by three per cent, and he hoped to see an improvement to this result in the future as passengers saw the benefits of additional carriages introduced in December last year.

Well done GC - thoroughly deserved. Not sure how Northern scraped much support, rude staff, ancient rolling stock (check out the British Leyland plates) that breaks down every tick and the dirtiest trains.

Worth remembering that Train Operators don't own the trains that they use, but lease them from one of three fat cat ROSCO's (Rolling Stock leasing Companies.)These were created at privatisation and are now owned by big financial institutions.
Northern have to fork out around £60K a year to hire in just one two coach diesel unit of the "British Leyland" variety. So no incentive to hire in more carriages to meet peak demand then leave them idle in sidings at other times.
The big operators like Virgin can fork out train hire fees and still return cash to the Government. By contrast, Northern gets much of its income as Govt. subsidy. Much of that goes straight into the ROSCO's pockets.
And finally Northern don't get much say in what they hire. There are too few trains in service, and the DfT has had to act as a broker, and tells the Operators like Northern which trains they will be allowed to hire.......

GC get my vote of approval too.
Used them last weekend. Couldn't believe how quick I got there, the price was unbelievable and I don't remember the last time I had that much leg room on public transport.
Good work Grand Central!

I got a first class ticket from York to London for £39, excellent value and excellent service onboard. Made the return trip on an Eastcoast service, £149 for the ticket and no service onboard apart from the conductor reading the infinite amount of rules for that journey.

Grand Central have great staff and the legroom on board is fantastic. Also, they operate a few Class 180 'Adelante' trains which are, as a class, notoriously unreliable, and yet GC's ones often tick by withou issue (compare these to the ones operated by Hull Trains, who got the duff ones in the fleet, and have actually had to borrow one of Grand Central's Adelante's to keep going).

To add to PP's point, the ROSCO's are mainly owned by the banking corporations, so government subsidy to Northern Rail is more or less just paying out bankers bonuses. So if you want to give any sector of the rail industry some flack then aim it at the ROSCOs for extortionate leasing fees.

Very well done GC.
It’s all relevant though.
Here is an analogy:
A less stinky single piece of excrement compared to others within a room full of stinking excrement still stinks of excrement!
