A CAKE maker who has defeated cancer is offering one lucky couple the chance to win a wedding.
Wedding cake maker Angie Grinham, who is holding a raffle to win a wedding to raise money for cancer nurses. Angie is a breast cancer survivor and is encouraging others to check themselves
Angie Grinham, of Station Road, in Upper Poppleton, York, found a lump in her breast last March.
Within ten days doctors had conducted a mammogram and a mastectomy and a week later she was given the all clear – although she must continue to take a course of drugs.
Mum Angie, 46 will soon be having breast reconstruction surgery but in the meantime has organised a raffle with a difference to raise cash for Macmillan breast cancer nurses in York.
The prize is almost everything a bride and groom need to make their big day go with a swing.
Angie, who owns The Cake Boutique, originally intended just to make a cake and raffle it but when her colleagues in the wedding industry heard what she was doing many of them wanted to help too. She now has a spectacular package on offer worth tens of thousands of pounds.
The lucky winner will win a dress, menswear, a car, photography, flowers, a cake, stationery, favours, hair and beauty services, plus help from a wedding planner to organise everything. Angie is also hoping that local companies will come forward to offer a honeymoon and rings. The prize can be used by those celebrating civil and vow renewal ceremonies as well as weddings.
Angie said she was living proof that cancer does not have to destroy your life.
When Angie found the lump on her breast she said she naturally felt scared. The lump was actually a cyst, but that saved her life as doctors offered her the mammogram anyway. That found a different lump hidden deep within her breast which proved to be malignant.
But without Angie finding the cyst and getting it checked, the cancer may not have been discovered.
She said: “I am very, very lucky but I want to get across the importance of checking yourself as it saved my life.”
Tickets for the draw cost £5 and are available from now until October, with all proceeds going directly to the Macmillan breast cancer care nurses in York.
They can be bought online and at various wedding events over the next few months. The winner’s name will be drawn at a charity ball to be held at the Park Inn, York, on October 9.
The competition will be officially launched at a wedding showcase at the hotel on Sunday, March 7. For further details on the prize draw or to buy a ticket visit the website at winayorkwedding.co.uk
Anyone who feels they may be able to donate a honeymoon or rings to the package should email Angie at info@cakeboutiqueyork.co.uk
