Save Clifford's Tower

I WELL remember the public appeal to save the roof of York Minster in the 1960s.

At that time the Jewish Community of Leeds gave £100,000 towards this project. I found it ironic because York is the site of the biggest massacre of Jews in England - this after the victims had been promised refuge and help by the local citizens. This generous financial help was to rescue probably one of the few buildings that had existed at the time of the massacre of 1190.

Perhaps ancient history that is not relevant today? I think not. The modern citizens of York bear a responsibility to Jews past and present.

I implore the people of York to resist any further denigration of the site of Clifford's Tower.
