Thank you to everyone who has written messages and lit candles. It is lovely to read your stories and discover how highly people thought of our Dad. We all miss him.

Dr Heggarty was an amazing man. When we were concerned about our son Kevin who suffered badly from asthma as a boy, we did not want him to take steroids. Hugh spent a lot of time with us and eventually convinced us by pointing out that Kevin would take more steroids in one emergency admission per year than if he had a small daily aerosol dose. We have often thought about this as a mark of a great doctor. Coincidentally, he had also helped me at The Open University some 15 years earlier, when he had been a consultant on our statistics course MDST242.

Dr Heggarty made paediatric care both an art and a science. This wonderful man was a joy to work with. Everyone he worked with constantly learned how to improve their craft of children's care. A natural teacher, a natural healer. Always focussing on the patient, family and people first, he gave his heart and soul to care for others and he will be greatly missed.

At 5 months old, I was one of Dr Heggarty’s first patients when he was appointed a Consultant at York Hospital. The great man saved my life. I am sorry to hear of this loss. RIP.

A wonderful kind man who always had time for you. Sam still talks about the time Dr Heggarty took him to watch Sheffield Wednesday play and treated him to a McDonalds for his tea. Hugh always had time for a chat even if he was out shopping at the local shops .Hugh was wonderful and caring when I had Sam 35yrs ago R.I.P Hugh Heggarty you will be missed by many xxx

A wonderful man who cared for our daughter Catherine from 1983 til circa 1990,( my little rat bag) Dr Heggarty never forgot this nickname and years after Catherine had recovered, whenever I saw Dr H, he would ask after my ' little ratbag'. He saved Catherine's life. RIP and thank you

Hugh was my consultant in the 1980s, and encouraged me to forget about my CP and live a normal life. At the age of 51 I have been a university lecturer for 25 years and married with a 12 year old son. All because Hugh told me that this was possible and to get on with it. I did love the man - not just as a medic but as a friend and human being. The world is a better place because of Hugh Heggerty.

My thoughts are with the family. I wonderful man who gave me my life back. I was so sad to turn 16 and no longer be under his care. I will always the day I had numerous doctors examine me as a child, invited in by Dr H Heggarty. He put me at such ease by introducing me to DR Who Ee first. He has helped so many children during his career. Thank you.
