THE British Olympic Association has confirmed its final list of 366 athletes who will compete at the Rio Olympics next month – with our local lads Tom Ransley and Kyle Edmund amongst them.

The number represents the third largest Great Britain squad to travel to an overseas Games, and the biggest since Barcelona in 1992.

Beverley-based tennis star Edmund joins Andy and Jamie Murray, Colin Fleming, Dominic Inglot, Johanna Konta and Heather Watson in the GB tennis team.

Former York City Rowing Club ace Ransley, meanwhile, will line up in the men’s eight for his tilt at Olympic glory this summer.

Team GB Chef de Mission Mark England said: “After four years of hard work our team for Rio 2016 is now complete.

“We have a strong squad of athletes ready to do their country proud and it’s great to welcome our largest British Olympic team for almost a quarter of a century.

“I also genuinely believe this is our most talented ever team and to qualify in 23 out of the 28 sports is a fantastic achievement.

“For the athletes, the Olympic Games represent a lifetime of dedication in the pursuit of excellence and I wish them all the best over the comings weeks.”

* CITY of York athletes Lucy Hadaway and Alex Botterill both won gold in last weekend’s Schools International athletics competition in Ashford.

The pair had been making their first appearances for the England team and have now been selected to represent the North East at the Sainsbury’s School Games to be held at Loughborough between September 1-3.

Hadaway won the long jump with a distance of 6.00m and Botterill won the 800m in a time of 1:57. He also won a gold medal in the 4x400m relay.

The England team won the competition overall.
