MICHAEL Ingham will keep his place in York City’s goal for this weekend’s home match with Wycombe despite admitting he was at fault for Exeter’s goal in a 1-1 draw at St James Park.

The 34-year-old shot-stopper, recalled for his first City start since January, misjudged a Matt Oakley cross that saw winger David Wheeler head the hosts into an early lead.

But Bootham Crescent chief Nigel Worthington was satisfied with how Ingham recovered from his mistake during a second period in which Keith Lowe earned the visitors a share of the spoils with his 82nd-minute header.

Ingham made the team sheet in Devon after replacing summer signing Jason Mooney during the half-time interval in last Tuesday’s 2-2 draw at Cambridge and he will carry on between the sticks this weekend.

On that decision, Worthington said: “Inghy held his hand up for the goal. He’s been positive and tried to get the ball, but their lad has got there before him and that’s part of life and goalkeeping.

“He took a couple of big catches in the second half though and held on to them, which showed character. He has got the experience and capability and he will be in the team against Wycombe. It’s as simple as that.”

Worthington added that he was happy with a point from the 600-mile round trip after admitting his side turned in a “less than average” display.

“It took us a while to respond to going behind because people weren’t doing what they should have been doing,” the Minstermen boss pointed out. “It looked very much like we had played five games in a short space of time and come into this game on the back of a long journey.

“I think it took 35 minutes before we actually passed the ball like we can do and we made hard work of the match – there’s no doubt about that. Exeter played quite well but that might have been down to us not doing our jobs as well as we have been doing.

“Our performances have been excellent this season but we were hit and miss. A point away from home is never a bad result though and I am happy to get a draw from a game in which we were less than average.

“It’s out of the way now and we have a week for myself and (assistant manager) Steve (Torpey) to rehearse, rehearse and rehearse before Wycombe at home on Saturday.”

City have now shared the spoils in all four of their opening Sky Bet League Two fixtures with Worthington stressing the need to turn those draws into wins quickly.

“We are unbeaten, which is always a good thing, but we’ve got to really push on now and get three points,” he reasoned. “We have got to try and force the situation and play with belief.”

Centre-back Lowe’s goal was his second of the season already and Worthington is happy with that return, saying: “We need goals from every department and he’s doing his bit at the moment.”

Winger Lindon Meikle, meanwhile, could be restored to the first XI this weekend after being restricted to a substitute outing against Exeter due to illness with midfielder Tom Platt filling in on the flank.

On Meikle’s condition, Worthington said: “He had a bug and was really under the weather. It was touch and go whether he would even make the bench, but he came on and put a shift in for the team and that’s the type of boy he is.

“Tom Platt deserves credit too for playing out of position and putting in a shift.”
