YORK CITY were robbed of an opening day League Two victory at Tranmere Rovers after conceding an equaliser in stoppage time.

Keith Lowe's bullet header on 67 minutes looked to have secured three points for the Minstermen but James Rowe's snapshot, with time running out, secured a late, late goal for the Merseysiders and a 1-1 draw.

Lowe struck from a Lindon Meikle corner kick and almost extended the lead in copycat fashion, only for Owain Fon Williams to deny him.

But Tranmere created chances of their own and, despite only having ten men on the pitch for the last seven minutes, after skipper Marcus Holness was forced off through injury, pushed hard for a leveller.

And they got it when, after the ball bounced around the outside of the area, James Rowe struck a fierce drive that goalkeeper Jason Mooney could only deflect into the corner of the net.

It was unfortunate on York, who had nullified Rovers early on and created several chances to extend their lead after they went in front.

Ben Hirst and Michael Coulson could both have got on the scoresheet and the Minstermen should remain positive about their performance - despite the late calamity.

Roared on by more than 800 travelling fans, they looked solid at the back - Lowe and partner John McCombe picking up where they left off last season - and they threatened on both flanks through Meikle and Anthony Straker.

They had chances to kill the game right at the death and it was their inability to do that which ultimately cost them a three point haul.
