York City skipper Russell Penn aims to silence Tranmere’s Prenton faithful

York City captain Russell Penn launches into a tackle during the 2-0 friendly victory over Sheffield United at Bootham Crescent

YORK City skipper Russell Penn is hoping to turn the fans of opening day hosts Tranmere against their team for a second time in his career.

The Wirral club will be plying their trade in the Football League's bottom tier for the first time in 25 years following their relegation last season.

City, meanwhile, finished the campaign in their highest position since going down from the same division in 1999.

Penn feels that difference in fortunes between the 2000 League Cup finalists and last season's SkyBet League Two play-off qualifiers could lead to frustration at Prenton Park if the home side get off to a poor start on August 9.

The 28-year-old midfielder played alongside City's summer signing Luke Summerfield for Cheltenham during a 1-0 FA Cup first round win at Tranmere in 2011.

Plying their trade a division below their hosts, the visitors were underdogs on that day and, although only Portsmouth, Plymouth, Luton, Oxford, Southend and Shrewsbury boasted higher average attendances than Rovers last season from their League Two rivals, Penn reckons that a sizeable and expectant home crowd might not prove an advantage for the 2014/15 curtain raiser.

He said: "I am glad we are going to Tranmere. It's a good game to start off with.

"It's a nice ground and, when I played there a couple of years ago with Luke, I remember the crowd getting on their backs when they weren't winning. But we will all be going there positive and trying to pick up from where we left off last season."

Following the Tranmere trip, City have three consecutive home fixtures with the Capital One Cup clash against Doncaster Rovers followed by league tests against Northampton and Cambridge.

With the team having gone nine matches unbeaten at Bootham Crescent prior to May's 1-0 play-off, semi-final defeat against Fleetwood, Penn believes such a schedule presents a great opportunity to get the campaign off to a flyer.

"I have heard ticket sales are going well, so I am hoping we can really get the place rocking in those early games," the former England C international added.

My forecast last season was that we would finish in the top 6, well we all know where we did finish, ( I kept saying to those who laughed at my prediction keep the faith ) I have every confidence we will get promoted this season ,
Last season was as much about the support home and away as the performances on the pitch when your out there getting roared on by the crowd it feels like the 12th player,
The club is very well run in all areas, providing we keep clear of injuries its upwards , Enjoy the season all you supporters and KEEP the FAITH.

The season hasn't started yet, but so the nonsense begins. If we have a bad start, you two, along with yorkcityluke et al will be calling for Nigel to be sacked (just like last season). Let's calm down and not get too carried away (especially with RU55 PEN in the team).

Every fan of every club hopes for (& some expect) to have a good season and believe their club will be involved in a promotion battle. We are no different and hopes are high after an amazing 2nd half of last season. I will be looking at all results after saturday as I expect one or two will raise a few eyebrows. Clubs in league 2 have done quite a bit of adding/changing to their squads and as NW said in another article it will be a very tough league again. Should we lose at Tranmere I will not be getting agitated or shouting the odds, we need to get behind the team again and be that vital 12th man. Gud luck on saturday boys

Being champions isn't beyond the bounds of possibility, but demanding it from the outset is unreasonable and likely to set you up for massive disappointment.

Keep it real and back the players 100% from start to finish of every game. If they return the favour with 100% effort from start to finish, none of us will have too much to moan about..

As with any season, 10 games is the time to judge and 10 games is the point where a good prediction can be made.

All we want is 100% commitment and 100% passion and with the team we've assembled, that will see us in good stead.

Not long until the first game and my optimism levels are higher than last season. Keep the faith. Forza York.

Wise words, I expect we should be solid at the back & I am hoping better in midfield to provide a better ball service to the forwards, important for Penn to show some of the form he had at the end of last season, I lean towards a top half consistency & see where the run in takes us.
Cmon City!!!

There's nothing like getting off to a friendly start OAH aka BB. Personally I've never called for any manager to be sacked. The points estimate was supposed to be a bit of fun which seems to be an alien concept to you my good man.

RBL is the only one to nail his flag to the mast so far - anyone else?

Sorry Frank, I still think you're still facing in the wrong direction.

The fans of various Premier League clubs can expect all they want, but most of them will wind up disappointed, bitter, and utterly oblivious to the joy of being part of the great things that are happening at our little club.

There's a big gap between expecting and hoping.

I hope we'll win the League (especially since I've put a tenner on it) but my only expectations are that each player gives of his best in every game, and that anyone who doesn't will have to work d amn hard to get Nigel off his back.
