ONE step away from Lord's - that's what awaits the winners of Sunday's North Yorkshire showdown between Woodhouse Grange and Sessay in the quarter-finals of the Davidstow Village Cup.

The Hunters York & District Senior League duo square off at Grange's Sutton-on-Derwent home for a place in the last four with both sides looking to add to their heritage in the nation's premier knockout competition for village sides.

It's not the first time the two rivals have met at such an advanced position in the tournament - Sessay coming out four years ago as they went on to win at the home of English cricket.

But Grange, who are on track for a fourth successive premier division title, have been to the final five times, have won twice, and are bidding to return to a venue they last visited in 2012.

Nick Hadfield, Grange captain in the Village Cup, said: "There is a lot of excitement about this game. We know them very well and they are a good, well drilled, cup side. We are confident. We have got quite a lot of experience in myself, Steve and Mike Burdett and we have some exciting youngsters in the shape of Chris Bilton and Tom Young.

"We have played very well this season, have home advantage and have already beaten them this year in the league cup. They are a Premier League side, really.

"We are all very much looking forward to the game. The league is the main competition for us but this is a bonus. Both sides have got attacking players, they know how each other operate and it should be an exciting game."

Sessay skipper Steve Langstaff said: "We have had good games with Woodhouse Grange. I think both of us would prefer to play at home but they have that advantage and, certainly, they will start as strong favourites.

"They are a very strong, dependable unit and we have got a lot of respect for them. What we have got to do is try and come up with a performance and you never know what can happen on the day.

"I am really pleased with how we have done in the competition. There are no secrets between the two of us. They know how to win in difficult situations. We have got to try and put them under pressure. It's a classic cup situation and we will go in and enjoy it."
