BEN COAD and Charlie Elliot will help strengthen a depleted York Cricket Club side as they bid to reach the quarter-finals of the Royal London ECB National Club Championship on Sunday.

The Clifton Parkers will once again attempt to play their last 16 clash with Chesterfield at Clifton Park, which was called off last weekend following heavy downpours.

Skipper Dan Woods is unable to play, his Minor Counties commitment with Cheshire now extending to a three day game against Wales, while Jack Leaning is on first team duty for Yorkshire.

With Jonny Moxon still injured and Alex Collins recovering from a broken finger, Woods says the situation is a chance for young players like Elliot - the captain of St Peter's School - and Richard Love to cement places in the first team side.

"Charlie is an outstanding young player for us and we are offering a lot of good opportunities for the youngsters at the moment," he said. "We are missing a few players but we have still got a stronger side out than we had against Appleby Frodingham last week.

"Everyone just really wants to get this game played. All of the other knockout games were played last weekend and we just want to get on and try and win."

Rotherham form the latest barrier in York's attempt to win an eighth straight Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier League crown.

Still five points adrift of the leaders, Yorkshire Academy, another firm test of the credentials of Woods' men is likely at Clifton Park tomorrow.

"Rotherham is always a tough game," he added. "We have always had really close tight games against them and those matches have gone either way.

"They have key players who always seem to be in form against us, like James Moorhouse with the bat and Ben Sanderson with the ball. They are outstanding players who step up so it is going to be a very tough game."

Woods continued: "We probably need to win right through to the end of the season. We need to try and put a run of games together and keep putting pressure on the Academy.

"We have to play them again and it is looking like that game will be huge. It is not just the top two. Barnsley are up there as are Harrogate and there are probably four or five teams that all think they have a chance of winning it.

"It is probably the strongest the league has been in quite a few seasons. Anyone can beat anyone and it is exciting to be part of it."
