YORK City manager Nigel Worthington is hoping old friends will help his summer signings bed in quickly at Bootham Crescent.

The Minstermen's seventh close-season recruit Luke Summerfield played with fellow new boy Dave Winfield at Shrewsbury last season and is also a former team-mate of Russell Penn and Keith Lowe, when the trio plied their trade for Cheltenham, as well as Ryan Jarvis, who he lined up alongside for Leyton Orient during a loan spell.

Anthony Straker and Winfield, meanwhile, will team up for the same club for a third occasion in their careers following previous stints together at Aldershot and Wycombe, where Marvin McCoy and Jason Mooney shared a dressing room with the pair too.

The club's latest newcomer, Lindon Meikle, also briefly played alongside John McCombe at Mansfield Town.

On his new players' shared backgrounds, Worthington reasoned: "It is an advantage because having a familiar face or two around helps players settle in that bit quicker but they haven't been brought in just because of that.

"They have been brought in because they will add something to the group to try and help push us forward."

With all eight new players aged between 23 and 26, Worthington also feels his side will not be short on stamina next term.

He added: "You need legs and we will have a lot of energy and willingness in the group. We have also added height again, which is important because League Two is a big division and you need to be a competitive size."
