A DISASTROUS treble bogey on the 17th hole cost Simon Dyson a chance of making the cut at the Irish Open.

The 36-year-old European Tour ace had been a model of consistency in his second round - 15 pars and a birdie at the par-three seventh seemingly easing him through the half-way cut at the two million euro event at the Fota Island resort in County Cork.

But that all changed with a bizarre six on the par three penultimate hole, a 222-yarder he had birdied in his opening round of 70.

Dyson was penalised two shots for playing the wrong ball - he actually hit playing partner Brett Rumford’s ball - and then failed to get up and down with his own ball.

The Malton & Norton Golf Club ace needed to eagle the final hole to make the weekend number and, although the 2011 Irish Open champion found a birdie at the par-five 532 closer, his second round effort of 73 was one too many. He had a 40ft putt for an eagle and hit the hole, but had to settle for a birdie.

Finland’s Mikko Ilonen held the half way lead on ten under par after adding a round of 68 to his opening score of 64.
