GOALKEEPER Jason Mooney could make his York City debut at the home of his former club after the Minstermen were scheduled to play Tranmere on the opening day of the Sky Bet League Two campaign.

Nigel Worthington’s men will travel to Prenton Park to take on a side relegated last season from League One when the new season gets under way on August 9.

It means a swift homecoming for 6ft 8½in Mooney, who turned down a new contract with Tranmere to sign a two-year deal with City at the end of May.

Mooney made four appearances for the Merseyside outfit and will be champing at the bit to start on his former stamping ground but will first have to beat the experienced Michael Ingham in the battle for the number one shirt.

The Tranmere clash forms part of a tough first week for City, who entertain Doncaster in midweek in the Capital One Cup first round before Northampton, who were resurgent in their battle to beat the League Two drop last term, travel to Bootham Crescent on August 16.

York will renew battles with Luton Town, who won the Conference last season, at home on September 16 and at Kenilworth Road on February 10.

Boxing Day sees Accrington Stanley travel to York - part of a Christmas schedule that will also see City travel to Carlisle on December 28 and host Plymouth Argyle on January 3.

The 2014/15 season finishes with the Minstermen set to play in front of a huge crowd at Fratton Park when they go to Portsmouth on Saturday, May 2.

Sophie Hicks, City’s community and communications director, said everyone at the club was looking forward to kick off.

“We are very excited to see our forthcoming fixtures released,” she said. “Playing at Tranmere in the first game will be a challenge and it is something that we will relish and look forward to.

“We were very pleased with our draw in the Capital One Cup against Doncaster Rovers at home and people can see there are some really exciting games ahead.

“We have made a commitment as a football club to building the squad and we do encourage people to buy their season ticket before June 30 in order to get the best possible value to watch the team this coming season.

“We are really pleased to see we are at home on Boxing Day. We recognise we have a lot of ex-pat fans that come home for Christmas. It’s always a very special game and a special time to be playing at Bootham Crescent. We are very happy about that.”
