YORK Cricket Club suffered a second emphatic loss to Yorkshire Academy at Clifton Park to tumble out of the Yorkshire League Cup.

The 99-run reverse followed on from the Headingley youngsters winning on the opening day of the Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier League season.

Half-centuries from three of the visitors' top four underpinned an early stranglehold and, despite an excellent all-round performance from Ryan McKendry, the home side were always behind.

Eliot Callis was lucky to survive the first over but when he edged the ball to first slip and the catch went down. That set the tone for what proved to be a poor fielding effort from York.

The concession of 37 extras, 24 of them wides was compounded by some uncharacteristic lapses in the field all of which helped contribute to an imposing total of 267 for the visitors.

Callis did not survive much longer, Alex Collins pouching a catch at second slip off Jake Murphy in his next over.

But skipper Will Rhodes, dropped in the deep on 43, went on to reach a half-century from 51 balls before the England under-19 captain was second out with the score on 112.

Mosun Hussain (50) adopted a more patient but no less effective approach taking 83 balls to reach 50 only to be caught at deep midwicket three balls later, Ian Jarvis taking the catch to give Ryan McKendry the first of his haul.

Ryan Gibson played the most controlled innings, his half-century ensuring the innings maintained its momentum. When he was sixth out, caught by Glen Richmond at mid-wicket off the bowling of former Academy team-mate Ben Coad, for 54 the total had reached 243.

Three late wickets for McKendry, who finished with 5-51, brought about a frenetic end to the innings, but despite his efforts 100 runs were added in from the final 15 overs.

With double-centurion of the previous day Simon Lambert out injured, and neither Jack Leaning or Nick Kay available, fears the home side would struggle were realised.

Both openers were out inside the first ten overs and when the third wicket pairing of Ryan McKendy and Alex Collins were separated with the total on 65, Collins trapped lbw by the first ball of Edward Barnes, the fall was under way.

While McKendry was at the crease the home side always retained an outside chance, but the required rate soon climbed beyond eight an over.

The young all-rounder reached his half-century from 58 balls and added another ten to his total before being caught at deep midwicket with 141 still required from only 15 overs.

Jared Warner returned for a second spell and his pace proved too much for York’s lower order the final three wickets falling in the space of 13 balls as he finished with an impressive 4-18 haul.
