Black day as Heworth ARLC tumble to promotion hopefuls

HEWORTH ARLC suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of third-placed promotion contenders Blackbrook in division three of the National Conference League.

The Villagers trailed 30-0 at the break at the St Helens-based club and found it tough going in a match which kicked off 45 minutes late due to severe traffic congestion on the M60.

Heworth were forced to start the game without a proper warm up and the home side took full advantage, posting three tries in the opening ten minutes.

Winger Steve Parkinson, second rower Mark Webster and prop Joe Bate all touched down and Parkinson improved one as Blackbrook raced into a 14-0 lead.

Heworth worked hard to try to get back into the match but basic errors proved costly and Webster added his second touchdown on 20 minutes with Bate also registering a brace six minutes later.

Seven minutes from the break, substitute Callum Welsby crossed and Parkinson added his third conversion for a 30-0 advantage.

The hosts again opened strongly in the second period with stand-off Jordan Welsby going over after only four minutes for a try goaled by Parkinson.

Heworth rallied and some determined defence kept Blackbrook at bay until the 62nd minute when scrum-half Dave Scott crossed under the posts and Parkinson again added the extras.

The hosts registered two further tries in the final quarter from centre Jack Parker and full-back Tommy Cunningham, both of which Parkinson converted to complete a crushing victory.

Prop Mark Hayes took Heworth’s man of the match award.
